Robey's new dance work will debut today
James Robey Dance will premiere “Mudras” at the Redding Meditation Center at 9 Pickett’s Ridge Road on Sunday Nov. 22 at 2 p.m. This duet will feature Melissa Gerth and Amy Piantaggini, both instructors at the Ridgefield Conservatory of Dance.
“Mudras began as an exploration of hand gestures from various spiritual traditions and developed into a poetically zen-like meditation on the individual’s search for self,” said Mr. Robey, a Ridgefield choreographer.
In creating Mudras, Mr. Robey collaborated with Ms. Gerth and Ms. Piantaggini, incorporating ideas, movements, and sound elements from all of the participants.
“We drew from each other and our environment in making this dance the most organic way we could,” he said. “So, it seemed only natural for this piece to be danced on a non-traditional stage. We needed to try something different.”
The “Mudras” debut will include a talkback session with tea following the performance. This work is part of Mr. Robey’s work toward a master of fine arts degree from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee and is the seed for his upcoming thesis work that will premiere in the spring.
The performance is open to the public and by donation. The Redding Meditation Center is at 9 Pickett’s Ridge Road in Redding. For more information visit web.mac.com/jamesrobeydance.
