Dreams and Dedication Shine in Ridgefield Conservatory of Dance’s The Nutcracker
Visions of sugar plums danced across the Ridgefield Playhouse stage this past weekend as the Ridgefield Conservatory of Dance (RCD) brought Tchaikovsky’s The Nutcracker to life under the artistic direction and choreography of Mary Beth Hansohn. This timeless holiday tradition, performed by the students of RCD alongside seasoned guest artists, once again captivated audiences with its artistry, elegance, and festive magic.
The Nutcracker has become a cornerstone of Ridgefield’s holiday celebrations. Since its early days as the Patricia Schuster School of Dance—later transforming into the nonprofit Ridgefield Conservatory of Dance—this annual production has delighted generations, blending tradition with breathtaking performances.
The enchanting story unfolds on Christmas Eve at the home of the Stahlbaum family, where the mysterious Herr Drosselmeyer played by Edgar Cortes gifts young Clara (played by Francesca Prudente) a Nutcracker doll. The Nutcracker doll soon transports Clara to a dreamlike world of whimsical characters, waltzing flowers, and an epic battle between toy soldiers and mischievous mice (performed beautifully by RCD’s youngest dancers).
This year’s production featured Ridgefield High School junior Eve Aronow as the Sugar Plum Fairy, a role she has dreamed of performing since she was one of RCD’s youngest dancers. Accompanying her was guest artist Henry Seth, formerly of the New York City Ballet, whose unparalleled professionalism brought depth and brilliance to their pas de deux. Gabriella Howell graced the stage as the radiant Dew Drop Fairy, while Ainsley King enchanted audiences as the Snow Queen. Together, the principal roles shone like stars in a night of holiday magic.
Community Collaboration Brings the Magic
The production featured more than just skilled dancers; it was a community effort at its core. Ridgefield First Selectman Rudy Marconi joined the cast in Act 1 as a party parent, a heartwarming addition that underscores the town’s support for the arts. Amy Piantaggini, Executive Director of RCD, stepped into character as Frau Stahlbaum, while Polly Kingsbury, RCD’s Educational Director, brought charm to her role as a party parent.
Long-time board member Michele Gargan captivated audiences as the Governess, a role she has performed for over 20 years. James Dyson, who portrayed Dr. Stahlbaum, has volunteered with RCD for decades, crafting many of the production’s set pieces over the years.
The authenticity of the performance extended to the dazzling costumes, which transported the audience into Clara’s enchanting world. From the vibrant Land of Sweets to the shimmering snow-covered forest, the visual artistry added depth to the production.
With Tchaikovsky’s soaring score and the Ridgefield Conservatory of Dance’s stunning performance, The Nutcracker once again brought holiday magic to life, reminding audiences of the beauty of tradition and the dedication behind every pirouette.
Piantaggini extended heartfelt thanks to the “Party Parents,” the entire faculty and staff, and the dedicated students who have grown through this production process. She also expressed gratitude to the Ridgefield Playhouse staff for their invaluable support and partnership.
